 I'm really against putting all this effort into PDO and then only enabling
 it by default on sites with PHP 5.5+.  It seems like a waste.

 I'm not in love with Otto's suggestion, but it may be a good way around
 these poorly coded plugins (and they are poorly coded, we've had
 wpdb::query() for this since BEFORE v1.0).
