 So it sounds like it's generally agreed that there's a lot more work that
 needs to go into this. Given that's true, and that this entire project was
 never even mentioned in the planning and scheduling of the 3.6 release
 (and it's obviously a much bigger change than a small enhancement that can
 be included beyond initial planning), can we at least get these changes
 reverted and back into patch form for further testing and work until it's
 ready to be planned for a future release?

 The core team is always encouraging everyone to submit new feature
 proposals as plugins to play with first, then move to patches when
 everything looks good, and then only commit when it has gone through
 rigorous testing and discussion and is literally ready to be released
 (given some additional time for post-commit testing before release). This
 blew right past the first two steps and straight to commit, and it's not
 anywhere near ready. You don't even seem to want to start the discussion
 on the technical implementation details still, which will be required
 eventually.
