 A theoretical new icon font for WordPress should definitely be private use
 unicode range, +1.

 The tweet you linked, by the way, was referring to an old version of an
 in-development font, of which a newer version already uses only the
 private use unicode range. The open-source variant of that font,
 "Genericons", is also entirely private use unicode range.
