Comment (by kopepasah):

I too agree that we need something that is scaleable for the future.
However, the current icons in trunk simply do not mesh well with the
 design of the admin area.

I am also with @helen on this. We need to clarify on what needs to improve
within the admin UI and not limit our discussion on the icons alone.

 '''On a side note'''

I feel that making the icons too simple will cause issues in the future
with something so extendable as WordPress.org. You have thousands of
developers and designers contributing (plugins/themes), but you are now
limiting their branding to a fixed amount of shapes.

Many users rely on the icons only when choosing a menu item
([http://cld.ko.psa.im/image/3W2h2d1r3e2l when the menu is collapsed]).
Flattening the icons limits the developers and designers ability to
differentiate it plugin/theme from others. Take Jetpack for example. Here
is [http://cld.ko.psa.im/image/3E3A331a0h2v a sample] of the new menu,
collapsed with Jetpack enabled. How would we suggest the designer of this
icon differentiate itself from other menu items? How would you suggest the
other thousands of plugins/themes handle the change?

I am not saying change does not need to happen, we just need to consider
the consequences before hand '''instead of shoehorning these new icons
 into Core'''.
