 Adding a nonce field check does seem to remedy the issue - Helen thank you
 so much for this.

 If the issue is due to out of date code on my part then that's on me to
 remedy.

 However, as this involves data deletion I am concerned for other end users
 who upgrade to WP 3.6 on a theme that has the same technique implemented.

 As we all know, no one ever seems to back their data up before they
 excitedly update to the latest WordPress and I want to try and save some
 sad bunnies if I can.

 Please let me know what else you need from me to isolate and resolve this.

 Thanks to everyone who has helped me today, it is greatly appreciated and
 one of the reasons I love WordPress and the WordPress community so much.
