 I feel very strongly about adding a template for every single archive
 view. That is perfect for a child theme to implement if it wishes to.

 The default theme does not need to be the most complex and perfect theme
 to end all themes. See http://make.wordpress.org/themes/2012/09/18
 /default-themes-change-each-year/ for more on this philosophy.

 Related to simplifying the theme this way, we have also removed these
 files in the popular _s starter theme (back in January 2012) for this very
 reason. It's simpler and the code is duplicated throughout:
