Comment:

 And yes, I know the HTML editor has recently been renamed to "Text
 Editor", but that doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist.

 Definitions:

 "special HTML" = "certain attributes like colspan in tables, various CSS
 markup, and pretty much anything that can't be accomplished using the
 visual editor"

 After a user inserts special HTML inside the Text Editor, we could:

 A) remove the special HTML immediately, so that they're not surprised when
 they switch to the Visual Editor
 B) prevent them from switching to the Visual Editor, with a notice:
 "Switching to the Visual Editor will result in lost markup".
