 Wouldn't it be possible to make an intermediate stable maintenance release
 just for PHP 5 compatibility, and then continue working on other features
 and bug fixes?

 In the meantime, you should be able to replace the SimplePie class with
 your fixed version via a plugin (the one from `wp-includes/class-
 simplepie.php` will not be loaded then).
