 That's fair, though the proposed change doesn't remove all references to
 _thumbnail_id (see markoheijnen's comment above about
 `get_post_thumbnail_id`). I personally would prefer consistency (all
 wrappers or all *_post_meta), but I'll defer to the core devs.
