 In my eyes better code. When there are WordPress methods what does the
 work for you, you should use it.

 When removing the checks what I did most of the checks happen in
 set_post_thumbnail().
 The only issue know is that it does a get_post on the post ID. I'm curious
 what the opinion is from westi or any other core contributor.
