Comment:

 We built a plugin that allows a user to upload any image and convert it to
 favicons. (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/favicon-generator/). I've
 been retooling the interface because it's long overdue for an update, so
 maybe it makes sense to stop doing that and refocus our efforts on getting
 that functionality into core.

 One complaint that we get constantly is that favicons don't update right
 away because of the way browsers cache them. Explaining to a non developer
 that they have to clear their cache doesn't generally go over very well.
