 From inspecting the code it seems like tag balancing is done whatever
 flavour of HTML is being used, so maybe using the more generic term HTML
 will reflect better what is being done in the code.

 Actually I'm not even sure that it should be more then "Try to auto
 correct publishing standard errors found in the text", just avoid totally
 the whole XHTML/HTML thing. I'm sure someone with better english language
 skills then me will find a way to make it shorter.
