Comment (by belg4mit):

 The column-overlap.patch should be applied atop the first. It changes the
 left-hand menu to be position: fixed, like the admin bar, thereby allowing
 us to replace margin-left of the the content container with a left
 position. This seems to work fine for me in FF ESR and Chrome.
