 I had used post meta originally in the patch I posted under #17470, but
 when it came to actually implementing the filtering it seemed easier &
 less intrusive to follow the Sticky Posts protocol and go the options
 route.

 Switching back to post meta shouldn't be an issue.  Just wondering if
 there is a clear advantage to going that route?  Would we ever have to
 worry about duplicate entries overriding one another?
