 Thanks for the quick reply but I have already applied the first 3 patches
 after reading through this thread closer. I actually tried the combined
 patch 16706.2.diff first but got an error.  Also tried it last but same
 error:

 $ patch -p0 < taxonomy-16706.2.diff patching file wp-includes/taxonomy.php
 Hunk #1 FAILED at 636.

 Did I apply the wrong patches?

 As far as performance goes a bit early to tell but I noticed *most* of my
 SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS queries to magically improve but not all.
