 @solarissmoke: You made a good point, and I've been forced to conclude
 that the best way to solve my problem is with a plugin. I've finally
 gotten around to writing such a plugin, which is attached. Not that this
 is the best place for plugin review, but I'd at least like feedback on the
 name before I try to get it published. I couldn't think of a better name
 and I'm afraid this one isn't very self-descriptive.
