 I really believe we ought to be giving developer's the opportunity to
 determine their own post formats.

 I don't see how this is anymore "dangerous" than custom post types or
 custom fields. Many sites use these custom data structures without the
 assurance their data will work in other themes. If thats the concern --
 big mistake on custom post types.

 Post formats are essentially custom fields with a different UI. Why
 handcuff developers? Building constraints into an open-source project
 simply doesn't work the same way it does with a hosted application.

 IF, and I really hope otherwise, it comes down to a standard list I'd like
 to see a poll on the .org blog or similar to get a sense of what post
 types we're missing and which ones should definitely be included.
