 I assume the majority of WP user will go to a permalink like year/month.

 I did and pages were not working.
 The only workaround I found after some trials was:

 create page1 == 404
 create page1 again ok (permalink will be page1-2)
 trash page1 original

 why pages are not working out of the box?
