 I was about to claim that you can't use register_activation_hook() with
 that approach. Then I figured this should work:

 Dependent plugin:

 {{{
 function dependent_plugin_activation() {
     if ( !did_action('my_plugin_prefix_init') )
         return;

     // activation code
 }
 register_activation_hook(__FILE__, 'dependent_plugin_activation');
 }}}
