 My understanding of the merge project has been that we were working on a
 single codebase that both existing WordPress and WordPress MU site owners
 would be able to and would want to upgrade to.

 In my opinion, the last changeset on this ticket will be a significant
 barrier to WordPress MU site owners upgrading to WordPress 3.0.
