 And how do they handle uploads?

 We have no insight into their architecture.  If FTP is required there, the
 FS_METHOD define can be set to the appropriate means of accessing the
 filesystem (either ftpext or ftpsockets).  That might work.  Hosts that do
 clustering usually need to provide a plugin, as wordpress.com and others
 do for replication of uploads.
