Comment:

 koopersmith and I are talking about this now, and we have two potential
 solutions we're both working on.

 One is a variation of wpmuguru's patch, and the other is a variation of my
 initial approach. Both have the advantage of piggybacking on an existing
 get_post/get_posts call, and both would only be triggered when we want it
 (i.e. not in the admin).
