 I don't understand why WP needs to store so much thumbnails for each
 image. This causes a lot of head ache, consumes disk space and is wasting
 a lot of time and CPU power when you need to regenerate all thumbnails for
 all images when switching themes e t.c.

 There are good scripts (like phpThumb) that can create and cache
 thumbnails "on the fly". I always use phpThumb to display images on the
 front end, and this does not impact performance too much.
