 I think the widget approach is the way to go. Though I am new here and
 would not want to presume that my opinion is of equivalent weight to
 others posting here.

 I am happy to test the widget live on Chrome, Opera, Safari, FF and IE 6
 through 8.

 It would be useful to know which browsers are posing the DOM Node - too
 slow problem.

 As I expressed on the Dev Updates site: I do believe that widgetizing the
 menus and using existing sidebar areas is ideal from a
 usability/familiarity point of view.
