Comment:

 The dropdown UI for this is embarrassing to have in WordPress.

 The problems with the AJAX UI and guessing a city can be avoided by asking
 people to list the nearest capital or large city.

 Ultimately I think OS X has the best approach I've seen, with the map +
 city dropdown. Has anyone done that elegantly on the web yet?

 We should also remember that currently our timezone support does not need
 to be 100% perfect with regards to the 400 timezones in the world, as we
 could create something that works better for 95% of our users and the
 others have it no worse than it is today.
