 theres a patch around on trac to make pluggable functions into filters, so
 yes, filters are a better way of going about it, but is not the way its
 currently done by wordpress historically.

 +1 for this for me though.. but dont see it in 2.8, and 2.9 will hopefully
 go the filtery  way.
