Comment:

 Just touched this up to "high" priority, as this is a bug that stops
 wordpress from scaling.  At a certain point (number of posts / pages / old
 versions saved etc) archive pages take so long to pull up that a simple
 bot visit for multiple month archives can freeze even a fairly large
 server.  I have a few wordpress installs with more than 10,000 posts over
 3 years, and something as simple as someone with a cache bot download the
 site for offline reading can kill it dead.
