Comment:

 There is currently no way to hide new columns by default if the user
 already has some columns hidden.  When I apply this patch I see ID columns
 everywhere -- big columns that come before the checkbox.

 Let's put it in the bits that output the ID but leave ID out of the column
 headers. A plugin can then easily add the columns.
