 I see there hasn't been much action on this lately, but this would be a
 very valuable feature for WordPress.

 When using WordPress as a CMS it would enable comments to be re-purposed
 in a much more robust way when needed.

 When using WordPress as a blog, it would eliminate the need for plugin
 authors to create new db tables/columns to store additional comment
 information.
