 I'm not convinced using Gears as the primary mechanism is the way to go
 (that is, those without Gears get a ''significantly'' inferior experience
 with the HTML-based version).

 Flash has a much higher penetration rate than Gears by far, even amongst
 savvy users and developers. If the Flash-based mechanism can be fixed then
 that should be what's opted for IMO.
