Comment:

 I reverted * in the wp-admin directory, and it reverted edit-form-
 advanced.php (that was the one that I'd edited before).

 This brings back the earlier error. The publish button saves the post, but
 takes me to /wp-admin/post.php?action=edit which doesn't exist and
 produces the 404 error.
