 There are instances where that trailing period "should" be linked.

 If I look at the RFC, the link www.wordpress.org. (with the trailing dot)
 is a valid FQDN and in theorie the period should therefore also be linked.

 I see the point of unlinking the trailing period, but wanted to make this
 side-effect clear.
