 I suspect it may have to do with a timed out request for the latest
 version (my install was a taking a while to load, so I restarted Apache).

 Regardless of the cause though, we need to always display the version even
 if we can't say if it's the latest version or not. Simply put, there's
 some logic error going on somewhere.
