 To me, the work around translations is much more about acknowledgement,
 good quality and cooperation than "hard numbers".

 Let's say there's place to prominently show 2 or 3 translators. If there
 are more users listed among the contributors, the system could select what
 users to show at random. (Possibly using weighed randomness, so a big
 contributor runs a bigger chance of being shown.) Obviously, such a random
 selection would be cached for a day or so, and then a new selection would
 be generated, next time someone opens the same modal page again.

 There are locales with a large number of general editors. Once you reach
 the translation pages you'll quickly find them, so no need to occupy
 scarce space for those names in this modal page.
