 As far as I can tell the new categories (not tags) are taken into account,
 however, not all plugins have them added?

 Right now I can't add them here https://wordpress.org/plugins-wp/profile-
 builder/admin/ for example.

 Perhaps that's one of the reasons behind the weird search results for some
 queries.
