[wp-hackers] Hooking into updates-checking functionality

Hi,

Does anyone have any pointers for documentation about hooking into 
WordPress's checking-for-updates and performing-updates functionality? 
I've seen that various 3rd party plugins (i.e. not ones on 
wordpress.org/extend/plugins) manage to hook into this, but last time I 
looked I couldn't find any information on how to do it properly.
