Oh interesting....

I'd not heard of MariaDB before...
"MariaDB is primarily driven by developers at Monty Program, a company 
founded by Michael "Monty" Widenius, the original author of MySQL"

It's curious why these changes aren't added to the MySQL core if they 
make such a significant difference...
