Core update check sends these three version numbers as part of it.
This helped with the 3.0 update immensely, since PHP 5 was a
requirement change there, if you had WP 2.9 and PHP 4, you didn't get
an update notice (or at least not the normal update notice). Helped to
avoid breaking sites.
