It's hardly ever a problem for me, but it's a huge pain when it is. I
usually use relative URLs and never change subdirectories, but you could
theoretically do that with this too.

Yep, that's why you could do it transparently. I can certainly see it
confusing people who are used to having to replace it later, but I think
from a usability perspective it's much better.
That is, of course, one developer's humble opinion. :) (And as we all
know, I'm horrible at finding time to make patches, so it might not even
make proof-of-concept stage.)
