I reply here both to Mike and Aaron. I will read through Otto's comments
and
answer shortly. I wrote this while he responded :-)

Thank you everyone for the feedback.

This discussion is getting of track. The do's and dont's of DB design are
important, but not the key topic of the discussion. It has been interesting
though :-)

Adding tables breaks things, or requires a transition period to give others
the
time to adjust their code. It is not in any case my intention to deny this.
Although that doesn't mean it cannot be done, and couldn't lead to
improvements
in the end. Legacy is a sthg we need to deal with, and it drives many of
the
design decisions.

My original proposal was not based on my extensive knowledge of WP, but on
my
experience as a user. For me media support is there, but it doesn't quite
work
the way I would expect it too. It doesn't let me do what I want. I would
like to
help change that. With or without GSoC for that matter.

As said in the very beginning, I know im quite late with this proposal, so
perhaps my homework isn't done perfectly no. Since the general consensus
seems
to be that the core should remain light, I didn't propose to add a new
gallery
type or sthg to WP. From what I have read about features other users were
requesting in the ideas pages, I came to a first conclusion based on what I
know, that the core should be made more powerful.

My proposal pictured a final result, sthg like 'the perfect solution', which
is
off course not always the most realistic one. If a more thorough study
would
reveal that indeed the current tables are flexible enough to implement the
needed features, then I will be the last one to force a new one in there
just
for fun. I can live with the downsides of the current design, if it means
not
breaking everything. The discussion whether or not this design is the best
one
should take place when the tables are actually going to be changed, not yet
now.
If the tables are not sufficient, then adding new ones should be open for
discussion and it shouldn't be thrown away just because of legacy. There is
always a solution.

Instead of trying to formulate a proposal myself, maybe its better to just
ask
the question and see. I want to work on media, since I think it needs
improvement and it would give me the greatest satisfaction working on that.
Can
I help by doing sthg useful?

Thomas
