Usually when a server blocks 777 perms, its because 775 will suffice and  
777 is plain insecure.
There is a chance something changed on the server setup in the last month  
to cause this, but WordPress should detect that and not set it to 777..
Perhaps the OP should try 775 or 755 and see if that corrects the problem?
