I concur with Helen. Also, I've used multisite locally with the domain 
mapping plugin successfully as well. Just change your hosts file as Mike 
already pointed out.

And furthermore, I've used localhost with the domain mapping plugin to 
map subdomains to subfolders and it worked fine.
