I've used that and it's approach has a flavor that feels very different from the way the WordPress API is evolving.

Haven't tried that yet but will try it soon.

Have to disagree there.  I can't think of something more appropriate for a next step past custom post types than being able to define the custom fields for a post type.  Of course if making it a "core plugin" is the approach, that'd be good too.
