I tend to agree with Otto on this issue, but with a couple additions.

Under Settings > Permalinks, you can change "category" to something
else if desired (like "content").

Using .htaccess, you can create additional rewrite rules if your site
needs the extra customization. For example, rewrite all urls with "/
blog" to "/category/blog". Heck, I'm sure there's even plugins that'll
do that too.
