Micah, I second what Mike said:

One example of this is comment metadata.  Before 2.9, dozens of
plugins, for things like  antispam, social networking, etc., coded
their own thing to provide extra fields to comments.  The overlap is
mind-blowing.  In 2.9, we move forward a bit. I think you can still
contribute by identifying the fundamental services that all C&C
plugins use.  Crusading those has bigger benefit.
