Pinging is the only way that Google is able to display "15 minutes
ago" when it shows my post to the world in its top search results
moments after I click "Publish",  Enough reason to ping, I think!

It isn't the sitemaps ping, i.e.,
http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://www.name.com/sitemap.xml
.

I don't know how fast Googlebot comes after I ping. I gotta try that sometime.
