[wp-hackers] Plugins Receiving Emails

Hi all,

WP has the ability to 'post by email', so the software is obviously able to
accept emails. I'm creating a suite of support plugins for our WPMU network,
and one of these is ticketing helpdesk; I want users to be able to send mail
to 'support at example.com', the plugin to accept the mail, send a reply back
with a unique ID in the subject line etc.

Is there an API for dealing with sending/receiving emails? Or should I just
look to replicate the code in the 'post by email' feature?
