My God.

I wanted to thank you all for your little tidbits of information.  Put  
together as a whole, I actually got it to work.

The BIG thing was the EOL at the end on a Mac.  When I deleted the  
whitespace at the bottom of wp-settings.php, all the errors went  
away.  I was still having an issue with the install.php redirecting to  
a 404 error when I tried to install it, but I solved that by going  
*directly* to the installation file, rather than redirecting to it.

I had a thread on the forum about the issue, too - but I just posted  
my full "how I got it to work" response, in case anyone else came  
along and needed to know.

But I *sincerely* appreciate you all on this - wow.  I never would  
have figured it out if it weren't for you smarties ;)
