[wp-hackers] Very slow comment posting

I'm helping out a guy who's having problems with his WordPress setup. He has
a blog with about 5,000 posts and 150,000 comments. Performance is
reasonable except when anyone posts a new comment -- then the page refresh
takes something like a minute. After that page load is down to a second or
three. 


Does anyone have any idea where I should look for a bottle neck? I've ruled
out plugins.
