If I've got it correct,  if  "show_last_updated"  is set to TRUE in 
wp_dropdown_categories (or wp_list_categories), then the date of the lastest 
post to that Category should be displayed.  I don't recollect when that 
stopped working, but the report in Trac originated from the Forum thread:
